High-Value Recurring Giving Experience: Transforming Monthly Donor Upgrades
Conducted 40+ user discovery interviews and iterative rapid prototyping to overhaul recurring donor conversion, unlocking a ~20x uplift in monthly gift upgrades.
Context & Challenge
Recurring donor loyalty represents the most sustainable revenue stream for major mission-driven institutions. However, attempting to motivate an existing supporter to increase their recurring monthly commitment through traditional channels frequently underperforms due to customer journey friction.
The existing system forced active donors into legacy authentication screens and generic multi-step checkout forms. Donors had to re-verify payment cards they had already trusted with the institution, leading to significant abandonment.
Continuous Discovery & Research
Rather than jumping into code or assuming user preferences, our product squad instituted a disciplined continuous discovery cadence:
- 40+ Direct Qualitative Interviews: Conducted 1-on-1 deep-dive interview sessions with active monthly donors to uncover psychological resistance points and mental models.
- Opportunity Solution Tree: Mapped user pain points directly against strategic institutional objectives, prioritizing friction points that produced the greatest drop-off.
- Behavioral Journey Mapping: Pinpointed that the primary obstacle was not generosity or willingness, but security friction and confusion around legacy credential requirements.
Prototyping & Iteration
We developed three iterative prototype concepts in Figma:
- Variant A: A streamlined multi-step accordion.
- Variant B: A single-click modal with pre-authenticated secure tokenization.
- Variant C: An email-initiated personalized landing page with pre-populated upgrade increments.
Through moderated usability testing with prospective donor cohorts, Variant B & C combined delivered the highest task completion rates with near-zero hesitation.
Measurable Business Outcomes
- ~20x Uplift in Upgrades: Compared to historical upgrade run rates over the same promotional period.
- High Retention Persistence: Upgraded donors retained their higher gift tier at over 94% after 12 months.
- Repeatable Discovery Blueprint: Established continuous discovery as the standard operating model across future digital product initiatives.
Substantial recurring lifetime value (LTV) gains across key donor segments.
